What is VBS?
Vacation Bible School (VBS) is typically a five-morning summer program at a local church, designed for kids in pre-K through 5th or 6th grade. Children rotate through stations:
- Bible stories and discussion
- Crafts
- Music and worship
- Games or recreation
- Snacks
Many programs end with a family night that includes a presentation by the kids and a free dinner.
When it happens
Most U.S. VBS programs run between mid-June and early August, typically Monday through Friday from about 9:00 AM to noon (or 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM for evening programs). Larger churches sometimes run multiple weeks.
Cost
VBS is almost always free. Many churches don't even require pre-registration, though it helps with planning. T-shirts and supplies are often included.
Do you need to be a church member?
No. VBS is one of the most welcoming events any church puts on. Pastors and volunteers genuinely want kids from the wider community to come. You don't need to attend the church or share its faith — many parents send their kids to a VBS at a friend's church.
What to expect by tradition
- Catholic.Often called “Catholic VBS” or “Vacation Bible Camp.” Includes Bible stories, prayer, and activities; some integrate the lives of the saints.
- Mainline Protestant. Curriculum from publishers like Cokesbury and Concordia; usually warm, narrative-focused.
- Evangelical and Baptist. Most use Group Publishing or LifeWay curricula. Energetic, Bible-focused, with clear gospel presentations.
- Non-denominational. Often the most theatrical productions — themed sets, big music, professional lighting.
Tips for parents
- Pack water, sunscreen, and (for crafts) old clothes.
- Snacks may include common allergens — communicate dietary needs in advance.
- Plan to attend the closing program — it means a lot to your kid.
- If you don't want a follow-up call, simply note that on the registration form.
