Common Sunday service times
Most churches hold their main service at 10:00 or 11:00 AM on Sunday. Larger churches offer multiple services across the morning. Catholic parishes typically have a Saturday vigil Mass plus several Sunday Masses, including an evening option. Some non-denominational churches hold Saturday-night services for variety.
Catholic Mass
The Mass follows a fixed liturgy that lasts about an hour. It includes scripture readings, a homily, the Eucharistic prayer, and Communion. Standing, sitting, and kneeling alternate. Hymns and responses are printed in the missal. Find a Catholic church near you.
Orthodox Divine Liturgy
The Divine Liturgy is the central worship of Orthodox churches. It is sung throughout, lasts 90 minutes to two hours, and incorporates icons, incense, and ancient prayers dating to the early church.
Protestant services
Protestant services range widely. Baptist and non-denominational services center on a 30–45 minute sermon, with worship music before and prayer woven throughout. Lutheran, Episcopal, and Methodist services often follow a more formal liturgy with weekly or monthly Communion.
What about kids?
Most U.S. churches offer Sunday school or children's church during the main service. See our guide on churches with childcare for what to expect.

Tips for first-time visitors
Arrive 10 minutes early, sit anywhere comfortable (often back rows feel less exposed), and follow along — there's usually a bulletin or screen. You don't have to participate in Communion if you're not sure about it. See our full first-time visitor guide.
